Working with American Walnut in Product Design | Flexhouse

Mastering American Walnut: How Flexhouse Delivers Flawless, Engineered Furniture Components

Not every manufacturer knows how to work with American walnut. It’s a beautiful but demanding material. Pricey, sensitive, and expected to be flawless – no sapwood, minimal knots, and subtle contrasts. At Flexhouse, we’ve been working with it for years.

In our production group:

  • we use FAS-grade solid walnut, sourced through a trusted German importer with direct supply from the U.S.,
  • we’ve developed a custom stain formula that balances tone variation between solid wood and veneer,
  • we stain and lacquer all parts with precision, ensuring consistent, refined finishes across components.

📐 Engineering that Honors Design

Large surfaces – like dining table tops or cabinet shelves – require balance: aesthetic integrity and commercial feasibility.

That’s why we:

  • use veneered MDF cores (Title VI certified for the U.S. market) with top-grade walnut veneer on the visible surface,
  • integrate solid walnut edge-bands, which allow for rounded detailing while keeping the core structure stable and price competitive.

This way:

  • the shape and design remain uncompromised,
  • large surfaces resist warping and movement over time,
  • and the cost remains aligned with global market expectations.
